Reflections

National PTA’s Reflections program provides opportunities for recognition and access to the arts which boost student confidence and success in the arts and in life. Each year, over 300,000 students in Pre-K through Grade 12 create original works of art in response to a student-selected theme. This 50+ year-old program helps them explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful in school and in life.

The 2022-23 Reflections Theme is “Show Your Voice”

  1. Changes this Year: As you may recall, Reflections has been a little different since 2020 due to Covid.  First, prior to 2020, hard copies of both the entry form and artwork were required to advance in Reflections.  Beginning in 2020, National PTA began accepting virtual entries and typed signatures on the Student Entry Forms from our States PTAs.  Also, many schools offered completely virtual contests in 2020 and 2021.  This is fine but, like last year, for any entries that advance to the county-level contest, hard copies of the artwork/entry forms will be required (i.e., a paper entry form and the actual artwork for art/literature/photography entries and a USB stick with audio/videos of music/film/dance entries).  This is because any entries advanced to the next level of the contest also require hard copies.Second, as you may recall, previously the winners of the Arlington county-level contest were advanced to the district-level of the contest and those winners were advanced to the state-level contest.  Beginning this year, there will no longer be a district-level contest and all county-level winners will be advanced directly to the state-level contest.
  2. Virginia PTA Reflections Webpage:  Here is a link to the national PTA’s downloadable logos, posters, flyers, and social media images for it: https://www.pta.org/home/programs/reflections/startyourprogram#promotions.  While this webpage is very informative, you will be able to find more important documents on the Virginia PTA Reflections webpage:  https://vapta.org/programs/student-programs/reflections, including an entry form/rules.
  3. Entry Form:  Click here for the official 2022-23 Reflections entry form.  I found this on the Virginia PTA Reflections website in a link entitled 2022-2023 Local Unit Leaders Reflections Arts Program Resources.  Before distributing this form, I highly recommend you complete the top portion of the form.  In this section, you will list your name/contact information as the Reflections representative from your school.  You will also list your PTA unit number, the date your schools’ PTA bylaws were last approved (should be within the last 5 years), and the date your school last paid PTA membership dues (should be within the last year).  I would reach out to your schools’ PTA president/treasurer for this information.  If they don’t have this information, I would call the Virginia PTA office (804-264-1234).  You will also enter the following information on the entry form. Council PTA – ArlingtonDistrict PTA – Northern VirginiaRegion PTA – NorthernState PTA – Virginia
  4. Thursday, November 10, 2022 Arlington County Deadline: The Arlington County deadline for submissions is Thursday, November 10th.  This means that your school-level contest deadlines should be approximately two to three weeks before then so that you have time to judge your school entries.  This also means that, by November 10th, you should enter the pertinent information for your winners into this Google doc, and hand-deliver the winning submissions that will go on to the county contest to a bin marked “Arlington County Reflections” that will be under my covered front porch (4810 26th Street North, Arlington, VA 22207) starting Sunday, November 6th.
